Kilkenny … what a great city centre. After time in Dublin and County Wicklow, we needed to find a route back to Cashel. Our best option was to go via Kilkenny. It was also on a list of suggestions from Eileen (Ard Ri House.)  It was getting late and many of the shops were closed, but many tourists were gone. That meant we had easy access to parking and it felt like we had the area to ourselves.

The first gret sight was Matt the Miller’s pub. It made for great photos, especially the stack of barrels waiting to be picked up. We crossed St. John’s Bridge and headed to Kilkenny’s Castle.

Wandering around the castle grounds reminded me of the time I saw my first castle … Heidelberg Castle in Germany. Towards the front was a beautiful garden. We headed towards the back; the castle was huge. The grounds behind the castle covered acres and people were out enjoying the evening. As we were leaving, Kay pointed out a doorway at steps that lead down to a moat. It has all of the primary ingredient of a medieval castle.

A few more photos and we were ready to get back on the road. Kilkenny definitely warrants a return trip.
